Softball Completes Day One Of ASC 1st Pitch

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Howard Payne's Evangelina Tellez hit two homeruns versus nationally ranked East Texas Baptist but the Lady Jackets softball team would still fall 5-4 on day one of the ASC First Pitch Tournament.

After ETBU jumped out to a 4-0 lead, HPU's Evangelina Tellez hit a solo shot to center field to make the score 1-4 ETBU. In the fourth, Tellez struck again on her next at bat this time driving in Tylene Middleton with her to make the score 3-4 ETBU.

Later in the 4th, an Amanda Gober single would drive in Amanda Cruddas to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the inning, ETBU singled home a run to gain a 5-4 lead.

The Lady Jackets had an opportunity to tie it up in the seventh after Gober singled and advantaged to second on a sac bunt by Katie Poerner. HPU popped up and grounded out to end the inning and the game.

Keeley Lowrance went just 2/3 innings in the start. Baillie Trumble got the loss in relief throwing 5.1 innings, giving up just one run one four hits.

Howard Payne fell 6-0 to the University of the Ozarks in their second game of the day. Lowrance got the start and the loss throwing six complete innings and striking out three.

HPU is now 3-3 overall and will play UT-Tyler and Louisiana College on day two on the ASC First Pitch tournament.
