BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne softball team scored double header wins 4-2 and 8-0 over Schreiner University to open conference play Wednesday afternoon.

In game one, it was tied up at 2-2 at the end of the fourth. Schreiner had scored two in the top of the inning and the Lady Jackets answered in the bottom with two of their own.

HPU's Larisa Salazar singled to center field to score Haleigh Caraway and then Katie Poerner singled to third to bring home Amanda Gober tying the game at 2-2.

It stayed knotted up till the bottom of the seven when Tylene Middleton hit a walk-off homerun to left field with Evangelina Tellez on base to take the game 4-2.

Baillie Trumble got the complete game win giving up two runs on seven hits.

Game two was not as close as the first with the Lady Jackets winning 8-0 in six innings.

Tylene Middleton started this game the way she ended the first with a two-run homerun to left center scoring Tellez in the opening frame.

The Lady Jackets added single runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings. A three-run bottom of the sixth would secure the 8-0 run-rule victory for Howard Payne. Middleton doubled to center field scoring Katie Poerner and Carissa Zarate. Caraway then singled through the left single to score Middleton and end the game.

Caraway got the win throwing all six innings and giving up just one hit and striking out three.

Howard Payne improves to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Schreiner falls to 2-22 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Lady Jackets will have a weekend conference series in Belton this weekend versus Mary Hardin-Baylor.
