Jackets Win With 9th Inning Rally

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team used a three-run bottom of the ninth to defeat the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 7-6 Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets held a 4-2 lead after five innings. Scoring single runs in the first and second innings, the Jackets added two more in the fifth. A Sam Dollahite double down the left line brought home Joshua Martinez and Houston Holmes reached on an error by the UMHB first baseman that would score Dollahite from third.

UMHB had a three-run top of the sixth to take the lead and added a single run in the eighth to gain a 6-4 advantage.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth the Jackets rallied. Conner Roberts walked and Carlton Brown would reached on an error by the third baseman. Holmes then singled up the middle to score Roberts. 

Now with runners at first and second, Kyle Kulczyk would record an infield single to third to load the bases. UMHB relief pitcher Trey Swartzenberg would walk in a run on an Alan Sailors base on balls and then hit Cody Cain with a pitch to bring home the winning run, 7-6.

Both teams committed plenty of fielding errors in the game with six for Howard Payne and five for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Reed Klose got the win in relief for HPU throwing just the ninth frame. Corey Howie had a no decision in the start giving up six runs on eight hits and striking out eight.

Colton Buzzard, Dollahite and Holmes each had two hits for the Jackets.

Howard Payne is now 14-10 overall and 1-3 in conference. UMHB falls to 7-11 overall and 0-4 in conference. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm.
