HPU Opens Tuscon Invitational With Win

TUSCON, AZ – The Howard Payne softball team defeated DeSales University 11-2 in their opening game of the Tuscon Invitational Thursday at the Kino Sports Complex. Lady Jackets fell in game two 12-7 to Saint Mary's of Minnesota.

Howard Payne used a six-run third and five-run fourth to down DeSales University 11-2 in their opening game at the Tuscon Invitational.

Tylene Middleton and Katie Poerner each had two hits for HPU. Middleton recorded four RBIs and homered in the game. Baillie Trumble got the complete game win giving up two runs on six hits (one earned).

In the Lady Jackets second game, HPU fell behind early 5-0 after two innings. Howard Payne pulled within one after single scores in the third and fourth and a four-run top of the fifth.

Saint Mary's extended their lead with a four-run bottom of the inning. Each team added another run to round out the 12-7 final score.

Despite the loss the Lady Jackets recorded 14 hits in the game lead by Evangelina Tellez and Katie Poerner each three hits.

Keeley Lowrance got the loss throwing four innings and striking out four. Haleigh Caraway also saw time in relief.

Howard Payne is now 4-6 overall and will play Iowa Wesleyan College and Saint Mary's University again on Friday.
