Jackets Too Much In Extra Innings For Sul Ross

ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the top of the 10th to defeat Sul Ross State University 12-2 to open their conference series.

The Yellow Jackets scored 10 runs on seven hits in the tenth inning to claim the 12-2 conference win over Sul Ross State.

The Jackets led most of the game, 2-1, after scoring on a Carlton Brown homer in the fourth and Kyle Kulczyk sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth.

Sul Ross tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth to force extra innings. Then came the HPU offensive onslaught.
Seven timely hits, four walks and a hit by pitch led to a 10-run top of the seventh for the Jackets. It was the most runs scored by HPU in an inning this season.

Corey Howie pitched great in the start but recorded the no decision giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out six in eight innings of action. Carlton Brown, who threw the eighth, recorded the win to improve to 5-0 on the year. Reed Klose would go the tenth frame to end the game.

HPU improves to 19-16 overall and 5-8 in ASC West Division action. Sul Ross State is now 11-20  overall and 3-10 in conference. Both team will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm to finish out the conference series.
