Softball Blanks Sul Ross State

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne softball team recorded 19 total hits in 8-0 and 3-0 double header shutouts of Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon at Lady Jacket Field. Tylene Middleton set a new HPU record for career homeruns.

In game one, the Lady Jackets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead scoring two runs in each of the first two innings.

In the first, Haleigh Caraway homered to left center being home Tylene Middleton with her to make the score 2-0 Lady Jackets. In the second, it was a Shandi Winstead double that scored Amanda Cruddas and later a Katie Poerner single to center that would score Carissa Zarate. 4-0 HPU

Poerner would score in the fourth after stealing second, third and home consecutively.

The Lady Jackets then finished off game one with a three-run sixth to win 8-0. Zarate hit a solo shot down the left line. Middleton doubled to left center to score Evangelina Tellez. Caraway then singled up the middle to score Middleton and ended the game.

Baillie Trumble recorded the win allowing just four hits, striking out two and walking one in six innings of work. Keeley Lowrance would throw the final frame.

Howard Payne had 10 total hits in the game with Poerner, Caraway and Amanda Gober each having two hits.

Game two fell in the Lady Jackets favor 3-0. Winstead, who finished 3-for-3 from the plate in game two, started the scoring in the second doubling to left center the bring home Jessica Morales.

Then in the third, Tylene Middleton would hit her 18th homerun of her career to break the HPU record for career homeruns.
In the sixth, a Winstead bunt single would score Morales to round out the 3-0 HPU victory.

Keeley Lowrance got the complete game win allowing just two hits, striking ut six and walking one.The Lady Jackets had nine hits in the game. Morales was 2-for-3 from the plate.

Howard Payne improves to 15-18 overall and 10-8 in ASC play. Sul Ross falls to 9-25 overall and 4-14 in conference. The two teams will finish out the conference series with a double header on Saturday starting at 11:00 am.
