SHERMAN, Texas - The Howard Payne men's basketball team opened their 2014-2015 season with a 71-56 loss to the University of Dallas Friday evening at the Austin College Tournament.
With the Howard Payne down 26-22 with six minutes remaining in the first half, UDallas went on an 18 to 5 run to increase their lead to 44-27 at the break. UDallas, who is now 3-0 to start the season, shot 68% from the field, 67% from behind the arc in the opening half. The Jackets struggled hitting 12 of 32 shots for 38%.
Howard Payne would pull within nine points, 48-39, with 13:42 remaining in the game on two Jordan Young free-throws. That was as close as the Jackets would get with UDallas holding on for the 71-56 win. The Jackets committed just seven turnovers in the game and forced UDallas to commit 15.
Ty Davis lead HPU with 13 points followed by
Curtis Gile with 12 points and a game high eight rebounds.,
Khyce Randall scored nine off the bench and senior guard
Brandon Gould finished with six points, four assists and three steals.
UDallas was led by Aaron Wyatt and Michael Sarrat with 16 points each. Tom Kaiser added 14 points.
Howard Payne will take on tournament host Austin College on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
