HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Howard Payne men's basketball team fell 102-47 to NCAA D-I Sam Houston State University Monday evening at Johnson Coliseum in non-conference action.
The Yellow Jackets managed just 20% shooting in the first half as Sam Houston State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. SHSU shot 54% from the field in the first period and was 8 of 18 from behind the arc to lead 56-16 at the break.
Howard Payne would shoot better in the second half (48%) scoring 25 more points in the second than in the first. SHSU still shot over 50% from the floor in the second to claim the win 102-47.
Khyce Randall led Howard Payne with 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting.
Brandon Gould followed with nine points. The Jackets led at the free-throw hitting 10 of 14 (71.4%) while SHSU was just 11-of 18 (61.1%)
SHSU was led by Dakarai Henderson with 16 points followed by Marcus Burwell with 15. Paul Baxter had a game high seven assists. SHSU won the rebounding battle 45-32.
Howard Payne is now 3-6 overall and Sam Houston State stands at 8-4 overall. The Yellow Jackets will play next on January 3rd at the University of Texas at Tyler.,
