Jackets Take LC Series 2-1

Matthew Parks improved to 3-1 overall with win over LC

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team took their conference series with Louisiana College 2-1 with an 11-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Howard Payne starter Matthew Parks got the win going eight full innings, striking out five and only walking two. Parks improved to 3-1 overall with win over LC. Center fielder Colton Brown went 3-for-4 from the plate.

The Jackets got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame when Joshua Martinez ground out but scored Jake Sadler. Martinez finished the game with 4 RBIs.

With Louisiana College scoring one in the second and third, Howard Payne recorded four-run second and fifth innings to gain a 9-2 advantage.

The Louisiana College used seven different pitchers and recorded 13 total walks on the day. With the bases loaded, LC would walk in three Yellow Jacket runs in the fifth inning only.

The Jackets added two more runs in the eighth on hits by CJ Schumann and Joshua Martinez. Howard Payne allowed one in the eighth and four in the top of the ninth to hold on for the 11-7 victory.

Matthew Daniel was 2-for-3 from the plate with 3 RBIs and Conner Roberts finished 2-for-4 from the plate. Ethan Ferrel saw one inning in relief for HPU.

The Jackets are now 7-6 overall and 4-5 in conference, LC stands at 2-10 overall and 1-8 in league play. Howard Payne will play next on the road at Dallas Christian College on Tuesday, March 11th starting at 2:00 pm.
