Jackets Finish Up MC Series With DH loses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLINTON, Miss. – The Howard Payne baseball team fell 10-7 and 10-0 to Mississippi College to finish out their conference series Friday at Frierson Field.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second innings on an error and a Lucas Creed fielder's choice.

Mississippi College would answer back with a four-run bottom of the second to gain a 4-2 advantage. Then the Choctaws pushed the lead out to 10-2 with a five-run fourth inning.

The Jackets made two of their eight errors in the doubleheader in the fourth inning, helping the Choctaws grab the big lead.

HPU began a comeback in the fifth inning with five runs to cut the lead to 10-7. The big blow came from John Elmore, who cleared the bases with a three-run double to get the Jackets back in the game. Elmore, Cody Cain and Colton Brown each had two hits for Howard Payne in the game.

In the second game, the Choctaws combined hot-hitting with a one-hit performance on the mound from Jayme Monroe.

Howard Payne starter, freshman Matthew Parks, who entered the game with a 7-2 record and a 2.05 ERA recorded the loss for the Jackets. MC tallied eight hits and nine runs, as Parks walked five batters and hit one. The lone hit for Howard Payne came in the fifth inning when Will Roberts sent a line drive up the middle to break up the perfect game.

Howard Payne finishes the series at 15-17 overall and 12-15 in ASC play. Mississippi College stands at 17-15 overall and 15-12 in conference. The Jackets will have a road non-conference double header with Arlington Baptist College on Tuesday before returning home next weekend for a conference series with the University of Texas at Tyler.
