Jackets Fall In Final Frame To Patriots

Colton Brown

Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team's late push was nipped in the final frame 5-4 by the University of Texas at Tyler Friday afternoon in conference action at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets would take a 4-3 lead in the seventh on a Kyle Kulczyk RBI single up the middle to score Colton Brown. Mississippi College would then score two in the top of the ninth to retake the lead 5-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Jackets would have lead-off batter Colton Brown walk. After a Dustin DeJohn strikeout, Brown stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Matthew Daniel then drew a walk to place Jacket runners at the corners with one out.

Kulczyk would then line into double play to the MC shortstop and get CJ Schumann out on the play who had pinch ran for Daniel to end the game.

HPU starter Matthew Parks went 8.1 innings in the loss and struckout four while walking just one. Ethan Ferrel threw the final two outs of the top of the ninth.

Colton Brown, Kyle Kulzyck and Connor Roberts each had two hits for the Jackets.

Howard Payne is now 15-20 overall and 12-16 in conference. MC is 14-21 overall and 12-16 in ASC play. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm with the HPU senior to be recognized in between games.
