Jackets Fall In Extra Innings

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Howard Payne baseball team fell 4-3 in an extra innings thriller to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the opening round of the American Southwest Conference baseball tournament Wednesday morning.

With the loss Howard Payne (19-22) will play next on Thursday in an elimination game at 10:00 am versus the loser of the Concordia-Texas and Texas-Tyler game.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (26-15) drove in the winning run from second base in the bottom of the 11th on a single by Robert Loewe.

Howard Payne took a 1-0 lead in the first inning scoring on a John Elmore double down the left line to plate Colton Brown who had reached on a single to the pitcher.

The Jackets then added another run in the fourth when Conner Roberts reached on a fielder's choice and Colton Brown scored.

Mary Hardin-Baylor answered in the bottom of the inning to pull within one on a RBI single through the right side.

HPU gained a 3-1 advantage in the seventh when Lucas Creed stole second the advantage to third and home on a fielding error by the UMHB center fielder.
Mary Hardin-Baylor would tie the game up at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth and eventually force extra innings.

HPU starter Matthew Parks went 8.1 innings giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out eight. Ethan Ferrel threw the remaining 2.1 and allowed just the one run on three hits.

Second baseman Lucas Creed had a career day at the plate for HPU going 4-for-4 all singles, three were infield hits. Third baseman John Elmore was 3-for-5 for the Jackets with an RBI.
