BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne men's soccer team took an early lead but could not hold on falling 3-1 to Wayland Baptist University Friday afternoon in non-conference action.

Howard Payne's Shay Pate scored an unassisted goal just 16:58 seconds into the match on a shot from the top of the box.

Wayland would answer back just 10 seconds later when David Neuberth netted his first of three goals on the day. 

Tied 1-1 at halftime, Neuberth scored his second and third goals in the 53rd and 74th minutes to give Wayland the 3-1 win.

Howard Payne was outshot 26-4 overall and 16-2 on goal. HPU's Brice Gardner got the loss in goal playing all 90 minutes and recording 13 saves.

Howard Payne is now 0-5-0 on the year and Wayland stands at 3-1-0 overall, Howard Payne will play next on Sunday the 14th at the University of Dallas at 2:00 pm in Irving, Texas.
