BELTON, Texas – Foul trouble for Howard Payne in the second half leads to a 97-85 conference loss for the Yellow Jackets to Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday at the Mayborn Campus Center.
Both teams shot the game well in the first half but it was UMHB going to the foul line ten more times in the first half that was the difference. UMHB held a 48-35 lead at the break.
The Yellow Jackets got in foul trouble in the second half and UMHB would lead by double digits most of the second half.
The Jackets would pull to within seven with nine minutes to play but that was as close as they would get falling 97-85.
Ty Davis led HPU with 18 points off the bench.
Brandon Gould had 17 points and five assists.
Sterling Smoak finished with 13 points and a game high nine rebounds.
Rickey Guillory added 11 points.
UMHB was led by Russell Green with 21 followed by Daniel Mills and Jerard Graham with 20 each. Jalen Jury added 16.
Howard Payne is now 7-9 overall and 7-4 in American Southwest Conference action. UMHB stands at 13-4 overall and 10-2 in conference. The Jackets will play next on Thursday at home versus the University of Texas at Dallas.
