BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team's fourth quarter push came up short in a 35-23 loss to Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
Down 28-7 going into the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored 16 points to pull within 12, 25-23 with 1:11 to play after an additional Sul Ross State University touchdown.
The Jackets onside lick attempt failed and the Lobos were able to run out the clock to claim the win.
Sul Ross State scored three second quarter touchdowns to lead 21-0 at the half. The Lobos finished the game with 446 yards of total offense, 211 on the ground and 235 in the air.
The Jackets got on the scoreboard in the third when
Ja'Von Dickson ran it in from nine yards out to cap a seven play, 46 yard drive. Sul Ross answered on its next possession to lead 28-7 going the to fourth.
HPU's
Blayne Parisher hailed in a 67 yard reception from
Richard Young with 11:46 left in the game. 28-14 SRSU. Sul Ross responded with a 10 yard TD run to make it 35-14 with 8:44 to play.
The Jackets gained a safety on a Sul Ross punt when HPU forced the Lobos to punt from their own one yard line with 2:28 remaining in the game.
On their last drive, the Jackets got a touchdown when Colby MIca recovered a fumble in the endzone after HPU receiver
Tracy Morrison fumble at the end of a 20-yard reception.
Richard Young was 19-for-36 passing for 285 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Justin Acosta had 64 yards on 13 carries and
Patrick Hernandez had 63 yards on 16 carries.
Blayne Parisher had two catches for 97 yards and a TD,
Colby Mica had five catches for 63 yards and a TD.
Young finishes the season tied with Scott Lincher (1991-1994) for career pass completions all-time at HPU with 653.
Gage Smith led the Jackets with 10 tackles, five solo.
Jordan Shaw followed with nine tackles. Brit Boler had an interception and
Jason Disney had a forced fumble.
The Jackets finish the season 1-9 overall and 1-4 in American Southwest Conference. Sul Ross State wraps up its season at 3-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.
