COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team fell 80-74 to Colorado College Friday evening in non-conference action.
Howard Payne held a 74-73 lead with 1:18 left in the game but would not be able to hold falling 80-74 after a Colorado College three-pointer and four free-throws.
With a one point lead, the Yellow Jackets would only get off two more shot attempts, one resulting in an offensive charge and other a missed layup. Colorado College took advantage first hitting on a three-point attempt and then going 4-for-4 from the line to steal the win from the Jackets.
Colorado College started the game strong opening up a 16-4 lead just five minutes into game. The Jackets battled back to take the lead on a
Khyce Randall three-pointer with 5:18 left in the first half. Colorado College would lead 40-36 at halftime.
Colorado College extended its lead to start the second half scoring the first nine points of the period.
The Jackets again made a push starting a 9-2 run at the eight minute mark. The run was capped by aÂ
Rickey Guillory three-point play with 4:41 to play in the game giving the Jackets a 67-66 lead.
Both teams shot around 50% from the field in the game.
Howard Payne did hold the rebounding advantage 34-27 over Colorado College. The only other major difference in the two teams was that the Jackets committed 15 turnovers while only forcing seven from Colorado College.
The Jackets went 8-for-14 (57.1%) from behind the arc and 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the line as a team on the night.
Howard Payne was led by Randall with 19 points and seven rebounds. Volney Willis followed with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
Rickey Guillory finished with 14 points and four assists and
Curtis Gile added 11 points.
Andrew Maddock led Colorado College with a game high 25 points. Eric Houska had 13, Like Winfield had 11 and James Lonergan followed with 10.
Howard Payne is now 0-4 overall and Colorado College stands at 1-2 on the year. The Jackets will play Hamline University on day two of the Colorado College Tournament.
