HPU Falls 83-68 To Hamline

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Howard Payne University men's basketball shot just 37% from the field in an 83-68 loss to Hamline University Saturday evening in non-conference play.

Despite outrebounding Hamline 45-31 in the game, Howard Payne could not over 52% (59% in the second half) shooting from Hamline. The Jackets outscored Hamline 40-30 in the paint but Hamline's bench scoring led 32-7 over HPU's.

The Jackets would led from the start of the game building a 19-8 lead over Hamline on a Shadd Cole layup with 12:23 left in the first half.

Hamline went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to pull with one, 19-18 and took the lead 24-21 with 6:47 left in the half. After leading 41-30 at the half, Hamline went on to lead by double digit most of the second half.

Rickey Guillory led with a game high 15 points and nine rebounds for Howard Payne. With his first double double of the season, Curtis Gile finished with 14 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Khyce Randall and Volney Willis each added 14 points. Randall was 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Hamline was led by Quinton Garvis with 14 points followed by Zach Smith with 12. Hamline would have six total players score in double digits with four other players scoring 11 points.

Howard Payne now stands at 0-5 to start the season. Hamline is now 2-2 on the year. The Jackets will start conference play next thursday traveling to the University of Texas at Tyler for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
