SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – The Howard Payne men's basketball team held Centenary College to just 33.7 percent (29-for-86) shooting from the field as the Yellow Jackets defeated Centenary College 83-74 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets dominated the glass 54-39 while shooting 49% from the field in the game. Howard Payne did commit 27 turnovers, 16 in the second half.
Centenary overcame a 17-point lead by Howard Payne in the second half to force overtime, including a 9-2 run in the final 3:10 of regulation. Centenary made the game-tying layup while being fouled with five seconds left. The Gents missed the ensuing free throw, and the Yellow Jackets grabbed the board.
Centenary began the overtime period with a layup, but Howard Payne went on a 13-2 run to claim the game 83-74.
Cam Frank tied the game at 70 and two free throws by
Khyce Randall gave Howard Payne the lead for good.
Bryan Adams added the fastbreak layup to put the Jackets up four with 3:03 left.
Centenary cut the deficit in half with a layup, but Adams drained a three. He added a jumper and Randall finished the run with a layup as Howard Payne led 81-72 with a minute left in overtime.
Starter
Khyce Randall and
DJ Gardner came off the bench to lead the Jackets with 15 apiece, Adams added 13 off the bench in his first game of the season. Randall and
Curtis Gile each grabbed a team high nine rebounds.
Rickey Guillory added 12 points and eight rebounds. Point guard
Cam Frank finished with 14 points.
Centenary was led by Travion Kirkendoll with a game high 21 points. Treylan Matthews had 18 points and Brandon Campbell followed with 12. James Sapp added 12 points and game high 14 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 1-7 overall and Centenary falls to 6-3 overall on the season. The Yellow Jackets will play Rust College on day two of the Centenary Tournament starting at 4:00 pm.,
