LONGVIEW, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team was outscored by ten in the second half in a 85-73 conference loss to LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon.
Though Howard Payne dominated in points in the paint 36-23 and in rebounding 46-36, it was the Jackets 35% shooting from the field that proved to be the difference in the game.
With Howard Payne trailing 35-33 at the half, LeTourneau used two runs in the second half to build an 18 point (76-58) advantage with four minutes to play.
The Jackets would attempt a late push and with 1:32 remaining a
David Dingle layup made it a nine point game (78-69). LeTourneau went 7-for-9 from the line in the closing minutes to secure the game 85-76.
Khyce Randall led HPU with his second double-double of the season, 19 points and 10 rebounds. Randall was 10-for-11 from the free-throw line.
Rickey Guillory followed with 14 points and seven rebounds.
LeTourneau was led by CJ Edwards with a game high 21 points. Jeff Martin had 18 points and Christian Seidl added 15.
Howard Payne is now 0-7 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference action. LeTourneau stands at 2-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. Howard Payne will play next at the Centenary College tournament on December 19-20. HPU will take on host Centenary on the 19th and Rust College on the 20th.
