ABILENE, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team could not overcome a six run sixth and four errors in a 13-5 non-conference loss to McMurry University Tuesday at Walt Driggers Field.
Down 3-0 after five, the Yellow Jackets allowed six runs in the sixth prompted by two HPU fielding errors.Â
The Jackets final got on the scoreboard in the eighth when Jacob Cowling grounded out to pitcher but would score Walker Dailey from third base who had singled earlier. After a Cody Brown walk and Brandon Garrett singled up the middle, Dustin DeJohn singled scored Garrett and Brown on
 an error by right fielder.
HPU added two more runs in the ninth, this time a John Elmore ground out to second base scored Connor Roberts. Later Brown reached on an error by the second baseman allowing Dailey to score.John Elmore and
Dustin DeJohn each had two hits and a RBI for the Jackets. Six other Jackets would record hits.Â
Matthew Parks got the loss in the start for HPU throwing 1.2 innings.
Shae Edmonds saw 3.1 innings in relief allowing one run on two hits.

Garrett Virgin and
Shawn Brody each saw one inning of action.
Howard Payne is now 1-1 overall and McMurry stands at 5-2 overall. The Yellow Jackets will have a weekend conference series at Mary Hardin-Baylor this next weekend in Belton, Texas. There will be a single game on Friday at 6:00 pm and a double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 noon.
