BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne men's basketball team outrebounded Sul Ross State by 24 on their way to a 96-80 conference victory Monday evening at the Brownwood Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets controled the opening period shooting 54% from the field and outrebounding Sul Ross State 23-6 in the first half.
Leading 47-38 at the half, Sul Ross would cut the Jacket lead to five midway through the second. The Jackets held strong and again extended their lead to double digits.
After pushing their advantage to 90-71 with 1:20 remaining in the game, the Jacket reserves would get an opportunity to play. Howard Payne went on to post the 96-80 conference victory.
The Jackets shot a red hot 60% from the field in the second half while holding Sul Ross to just 35% for the period. Howard Payne also dominated the boards 46-22 for the game.
Brandon Gould led all scorers with 24 points along with seven rebounds.
Khyce Randall followed with 18 points.
Rickey Guillory had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Sterling Smoak had eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Sul Ross was led by Alex Harrison with 24 points. Rocky Feliciano had 18, Like Taylor has 16 and Stephon Holland followed with 13 points.
Howard Payne is now 12-11 overall and 12-6 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross falls to 4-19 overall and 4-14 in conference. The Jackets will play next on Thursday at home versus East Texas Baptist University at 7:30 pm.
