AUSTIN, Texas - The Howard Payne baseball team falls 7-2 to East Texas Baptist in an elimination game on day three of the American Southwest Conference tournament.
With Howard Payne recording eight hits to ETBU's ten, the Jackets committed three errors in the game third inning allowing to ETBU runs and a 3-1 advantage.
Howard Payne started the game scoring one in their first at bat when Cody,Brown grounded out to second base to score
Brandon Garrett scored.
ETBU answered with a RBI single in the first and then took a 3-1 lead in the third sparked by the three HPU errors. They added single runs in the 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th innings to build a 7-1 lead going into the eighth.
During that time the Jackets would have the bases loaded twice but walked away with no runs.
Finally in the ninth with the bases loaded for the third time, a wild pitch allowed
Bailey Smith to score after he pitch ran for
Matthew Daniel.
Dustin Kelver recorded the the loss in the start for HPU going 5.2 innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits, striking out three.
Shawn Brody and
Zach Moseley saw time in relief for the Jackets.
Brandon Garrett and
Matthew Daniel each had two hits for the Jackets in the game.
Howard Payne finishes the season at 16-25 overall, ETBU advances in the tournament and is now 21-21 on the year.
