Jackets Lose 34-27

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne's second half charge came up short falling 34-27 to Austin College Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Despite the loss, HPU place kicker Joshua Martinez broke the Howard Payne career field goal record on his 35 yard field goal with 10:41 left to play in the game. Martinez now stands at 26 for his career, the previous record was held by Drew McMasters with 25 (2002-2005)

Austin College got on the board first on a 13-yard touchdown pass five minutes into the game. Joshua Martinez answered for the Jackets with a 40 yard field goal to make the game 7-3. After the field goal for the Jackets, Austin College connected on a 26-yard pass to make it a 14-3 game with 39 seconds left in the opening quarter.

HPU answered back with a Patrick Hernandez eight yard touchdown to cut it to a four point game, but a 34-yard field goal sent Austin College into halftime leading 17-10.

Austin College tossed its third touchdown pass of the game in the third, and after HPU answered back with a touchdown pass of their own, a three yard shovel pass to Colby Mica to cut the game to 24-17 Austin College.

Colby Mica led all receivers with eight receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Austin College added a fourth TD pass, this time from 19 yards out to make it 31-17 with 5:51 left in the third quarter.

Howard Payne got a touchdown pass from Richard Young to DeAndre Walker to end the third, and a field goal by Joshua Martinez cut it to a 31-27 game with 10:41 left to play.

AC then forced a fumble on the Jackets next possession returning it 52 yards. Austin College then hit a 30-yard field goal to make it a 34-27 final.

Richard Young was 18-of-32 passing for 236 yards and two TDs. Collin Rome had his best game as a Jacket with 73 yards on 18 carries.

Jason Disney led all tackles with 16, six solo followed by Gage Smith and Jordan Longoria with nine each. Donald Preston and Abner Reyes each recorded a sack.

AC's Woodyard finished the game completing 16-of-28 passes for 206 yards with four touchdowns and one pick, and Madison Ross rushed 25 times for 118 yards.. Hayden Schilling and Stevie Reyna each had eight tackles for Austin College.

Howard Payne stands at 0-4 overall and Austin College improves to 3-1. The Yellow Jackets will play at Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas next Saturday at 6:00 pm.
