BELTON, Texas – The Howard Payne men's basketball team's second half run come up short as the Jackets fall 88-76 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday evening at the Mayborn Campus Center.
With the game tied at 11-11 at the start of the game, Mary Hardin-Baylor went on a big run and held a 48-29 halftime advantage. The Yellow Jackets managed just 33% shooting in the first half while UMHB shot 60% from the floor in the opening period.
Down 21 points midway through the second half, the Jackets went on a big run and pulled to within three points twice. Two technical fouls by Howard Payne and free-throw shooting by UMBU held off HPU's comeback in the closing minutes.
The Jackets would hold UMHB to 36% shooting while connecting on 47% of their shots in the second period.
Howard Payne was led by
Rickey Guillory with a game high 22 points along with eight rebounds.
Khyce Randall had 17 points, three assists and three steals.
DJ Gardner added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
Demarius Cress led UMHB with 19 points, Sidney Deloach had 17 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Mills and Avery Polchinski each had 10 points.
Howard Payne is now 7-10 overall and 3-4 in American Southwest Conference play. UMHB stands at 6-10 overall and 3-4 in league action. The Jackets will play at Concordia University Texas on Saturday starting at 3:00 pm.
