BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team extended its win streak to seven games with a 68-63 victory over Sul Ross State University Saturday afternoon in conference action.
Howard Payne used a run starting at the midway mark of the first quarter to open up a double digit lead that their would maintain for most of the game.
Down 6-2 at the start of the game, the Lady Jackets outscored the Lobos 18 -4 the rest of the first quarter to lead 20-10. HPU then extended its advantage in the second to lead 44-28 at halftime.
HPU continued to push with a three-pointer by
Danyel Bradley giving the Lady Jackets their largest lead of the game 61-42 with 8:44 left in the fourth quarter. Sul Ross State slowly chipped at the lead and made a last push cutting difference to four points with three seconds to play.
After a Sul Ross State foul,
Danyel Bradley hit a free-throw to secure the 68-63 victory for the Lady Jackets.
Bradley finished with a team high 13 points followed by
Sarahi Castillo its 11 points and six rebounds.
Presley McKethan dished out a team high four assists.
Sul Ross was led by Jonette Jackson with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Shannon Villanueva added 14 points.
Howard Payne is now 12-8 overall and 7-3 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross stands at 4-16 overall and 1-9 in league action. The Lady Jackets will be in Abilene, Texas next Thursday versus McMurry University at 5:30 pm.
