Box Score BROWNWOOD, Texas– Howard Payne played its third overtime game of the season this afternoon and finished even with the University of the Ozarks, 0-0.
Four minutes into the contest, the Eagles were able to register two shots on goal. Behind the terrific play of Nicholas Panameno, the Yellow Jackets were able to keep the Eagles attack at bay. Panameno would finish the game with his first shutout of the season while deflecting eight shots.
Howard Payne's first chance at a goal came on a Alex Sanchez kick in the 10th minute that sailed wide. They would come within striking distance two more times in the final minutes of the first period when both Anthony Chavez and Derek Anderson had their shots deflected.
The Eagles offense put pressure on the Yellow Jackets all day and finished the first period with five shots. They also struck early in the second period with a shot in the 58th minute that sailed wide.
However, Howard Payne also came out and attacked early in the second period. Receiving back-to-back shots from Reid Longabuagh in the 60th and 63rd minutes respectively to keep the Ozarks on their heels.
Alex Sanchez and Josue Vasquez would each get two shots off before the end of the second period while Nicholas Panameno fended off seven shots to force the game into extra time.
The game became intense in extra time as both teams had players receive red cards in the push to get their teams the victory. The University of Ozarks received a shot during each of period of extra time but the Howard Payne defense stood tough and forced the 0-0 draw.
Alex Sanchez finished the game with three shots, two shots on goal while Josue Vasquez contributed two shots and two shots on goal. Nicholas Panameno had eight saves while facing a total of 14 shots to help lead the Jackets to the victory.
Howard Payne now sits at 2-8-2 on the season and will move on to face the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. and all home games are free to attend. Live stats can also be obtained through www.HPUSports.com.
