HPU goes 3-0 at McM Halloween Invitational

The Jackets finished their regular season schedule having won five of their final seven matches

ABILENE, Texas – Howard Payne University posted three consecutive wins at the McMurry University Halloween Invitational, downing Jarvis Christian (20-25,25-17,25-21,25-21) McMurry University (26-24,19-25,25-23,25-23) and the Univ. of Dallas (21-25,25-16,25-20,25-23) to finish undefeated in tournament play this weekend.  

The Yellow Jackets opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Jarvis Christian (14-19) behind senior Shelbie Harry and junior Cheyanne Lovelady. Harry tallied a team-high 14 kills, while Lovelady registered 35 assists, two service aces and three blocks. 

Sophomore Zhartezia Bradley led all players with six blocks while Brittany Taylor and Analisa Anzaldua had game-highs in digs (14.) Kailey Doering chipped in 11 kills and Howard Payne went on to cruise in the game's last three sets to take the 3-1 victory. 

In the second match of the tournament, the Jackets took down their hosts, McMurry University, in four sets. After being pushed into extra frames during the first set, Howard Payne dropped the second set, 25-19. They rallied back and took the remaining two sets to escape with the 3-1 victory. 

Zhartezia Bradley had a game-high 11 kills and also registered five blocks while Cheyanne Lovelady led all players with 30 assists. Lovelady also had a game-high four service aces, her best tally during the tournament. 

Freshmen Maddie Hatzold had five blocks and Macy Maniscalo added four in the victory. Brittany Taylor registered 18 digs and one service ace as the Jackets proceeded to record their second victory of the tournament. 

In the final game of the Invitational, Howard Payne downed the University of Dallas in four sets, 3-1. The Lady Jackets dropped the first set but rallied back to pick up the victory in three consecutive sets.  

Zhartezia Bradley had 17 kills and Maddie Hatzold had a career best, six blocks in the victory. Howard Payne received some stellar play at the net, leading the game with nine blocks as opposed to University of Dallas's four blocks. 

Kailey Doering and Shelbie Harry had 13 and 10 digs respectively and Cheyanne Lovelady registered a team high in assists, finishing with 37. Analisa Anzaldua had 27 digs to help lead the Yellow Jackets to the victory. 

The Jackets finished their regular season schedule having won five of their final seven matches and will now look to carry that momentum into postseason play. They now head to Belton, Texas to face-off against the University of Texas at Tyler. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. on November 3rd.
