Jackets collect first victory

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University returned home this afternoon to play host to Schreiner University, picking up its first victory on the season.

The Yellow Jackets came out crisp and focused and kept the Mountaineers on their heels all day, finally finding the back of the net in the 88th minute when Tracer Moore found Derek Anderson in the box to get the goal and the 1-0 victory.

After a first half of largely back and forth soccer, Howard Payne turned up the pressure in the second half and went on the attack. They had eight shots in the half and kept possession of the ball for nearly the final 15 minutes of play.

The Mountaineer goal keeper did a good job of keeping the ball in front of him and denying the Yellow Jackets offense of any goals. However, with two minutes remaining, HPU took a ball from the left side of the pitch and placed it beautifully into the box.

After Tracer Moore touched it, Derek Anderson was able to get his foot on the ball and promptly kick it deep into the back of the net to get the win. It was Anderson's first goal as a Yellow Jacket and it couldn't have come at a more clutch time. He finished the game with five shots and three shots on goal.

Howard Payne ended the game with 15 shots, 11 of them on frame while allowing just seven shots on goal from Schreiner. Goal keeper Nicholas Panameno had six saves and Tracer Moore added five shots on goal to help Howard Payne pick up their first victory of the season.

The Yellow Jackets had been playing well as of lately but have been unable to get over that hump and find a victory. Today's result came at the perfect time and the Jackets will try and keep that momentum going as they play UT-Dallas in Arlington on October 8th.
