BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team had its highest offensive output of the season but fell 50-45 to Belhaven University Saturday afternoon in the Yellow Jacket season finale.
In the first ever meeting between Howard Payne and Belhaven in football, the Yellow Jackets tallied a season high 45 points on 324 total yards. The Jacket defense also was big on the afternoon forcing two fumbles, picking off one pass and blocking an extra point returning it for two points.
Down 50-45 with under three minutes to play, the Jackets had the ball and the opportunity to drive the field for the win. The Jacket drive would end at the HPU 45 yard line on a
Trey Potter interception, his only one of the game.

Trey Potter on the drive before had found
Jordan Beasley on a 15 yard TD strike with 4:06 remaining in the game. The touchdown capped a seven play, 65 yard drive for the Jackets.
Senior
Jason Disney recorded a game and tied a season high 17 tackles for the Jackets while forcing one fumbles and recovering a blocked extra point for a two points. Disney finishes his career as a Jacket with 396 total tackles.
HPU's
Tracy Morrison started the day right by returning the opening kickoff 101 yards for the touchdown giving the Jackets a 7-0 lead after the Disney extra point. Morrison's kickoff return officially goes down at 100 yards and becomes the sixth 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in American Southwest Conference history.
After the Morrison touchdown, Belhaven scored two touchdowns and a 25 yard field goal to open up a 17-7 advantage with 14:51 left in the second quarter.
The Jackets responded with 13:11 left in the second with a
Caisson Montieth 42 yard TD run. After the Disney extra point it was 17-14 Belhaven.
Belhaven added two more TDs before HPU's
Jason Disney kicked 28 yard field goal as the first half clock expired making the game 31-17 Belhaven at the half. The field goal was at the end of a 13 play 49 yard drive by Howard Payne taking 2:54 off the clock.
Howard Payne started the second half strong scoring back to back TDs. The first one was a 24 yard TD pass from
Trey Potter to
Tracy Morrison, the second Potter found
Sayvon Young-Cormier on a five yard TD strike.
After another Belhaven TD pass with 5:21 left in the third, Disney returned the blocked extra point for two and Potter found
Ivy Smith for a seven yard TD pass on the Jackets next drive. The Disney extra point gave HPU the 38-37 lead with 13:35 left in the fourth quarter.
Belhaven then scored two passing TDs to open up a 50-38 lead with 6:11 remaining in the game.
Following Disney's game high 17 tackles was
Britt Boler with 11,
Patrick Hunt with 10 and
Austin Killgore with nine.
HPU's
Trey Potter was 10 of 39 passing for 177 yards and four TDs. Starter
Caisson Montieth was 6 for 10 passing for 36 yards along with 55 yards rushing on three attempts and one TD.
Belhaven was led by Mceachern with 428 yards passing with six touchdowns. Denarrius Noel led Belhaven in tackles with 11.
The Yellow Jackets end the season at 0-10 overall and 0-6 in American Southwest Conference play. Belhaven stands at 2-8 overall.
