BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's basketball team fell 74-65 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne outrebounded Mary Hardin-Baylor 29-14 in the first period to lead 32-29 at the half. Neither team shot the ball well in the opening period, 39% for HPU and 31% for UMHB.
Midway through the second half, UMHB used an 8-0 run to gain a 51-43 advantage. The Jackets cut the lead to three, 63-60 with 1:47 left on a
Rickey Guillory layup. That was as close as the Jackets would get with UMHB hitting 10-of-10 free-throws down the stretch to claim the win, 74-65.
DJ Gardner led HPU with 16 points off the bench.
Bryan Adams finished with 15 points and
Rickey Guillory added 13 points and eight rebounds.
UMHB was led by Layton Zinsmeister with 16 points. Sidney Deloach had 11 and Blaine Bronnon added 10 points.
Howard Payne is now 9-15 overall and 4-9 in American Southwest Conference action. Mary Hardin-Baylor stands at 8-15 overall and 4-9 in league play. The Jackets will finish out the regular season next Saturday at home versus Sul Ross State University at 3:00 pm. It will be senior day and also a special gold out day for fans.
