ABILENE, Texas – The Howard Payne University men's basketball team used a 7-0 run in the final minute to post a 75-69 come from behind win over McMurry University Thursday evening at Kimbrel Arena.
With the Yellow Jackets down 69-68,
Khyce Randall hit a three-pointer and was fouled with :50 seconds remaining in the game. Randall's free-throw was good giving HPU a 72-69 lead. The Jackets got two consecutive stops on the defensive end, while
Volney Willis hit two free-throws and
J Bailey hit one of two to clinch the 75-69 victory.
McMurry held a slight lead to majority of the game and would hold a nine point advantage midway through the second half. With McMurry leading 38-36 at the half, the Yellow Jackets outscored the War Hawks 39-31 in the second half for the 75-69 victory.
Howard Payne outrebounded McMurry 51-31 and outscored the War Hawks 36-20 in the paint.
The Jackets were led by
J Bailey with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Volney Willes finished with 14 points and six assists.
Rickey Guillory had 14 points and
Khyce Randall had 13 points.
Willie Foreman added nine points along with a game high 11 rebounds.
Nate Estrada and LaRandall each had 14 points for McMurry. Aaron Gettys had 12 and Blake Cochran added 11.
Howard Payne is now 9-12 overall and McMurry stands at 3-18 overall. The Jackets will play at Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
