Jackets Lose Series Opener

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Costly errors in the fifth proved to be the difference in the game as Howard Payne University fell 9-8 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

With Howard Payne leading 4-2 going into the fifth, two fielding errors by the Jackets sparked a five run fifth for Mary Hardin-Baylor. Playing from behind the rest of the game, the Jackets pulled to within one 9-8 in the bottom of the ninth.

After a Blake Laney RBI single to left field to score Walker Dailey, the Jackets had to winning run at the plate with two outs. Howard Payne's Brandon Garrett popped up to end the Jacket rally and the game 9-8.

Kyle Ramon went 6.0 innings in the start for the Jackets allowing seven runs, two earned, on eight hits and striking out six. Chad Anders threw one inning of relief allowing two runs on five hits. Zach Moseley went the final two frames allowing no hits and striking out one.

Blake Laney went 3-for-6 from the plate with three runs batted in. Seth Dohrman was 3-for-5 from the plate with one run batted in.

Howard Payne is now 5-4 overall and 1-3 in American Southwest Conference action. Mary Hardin-Baylor stands at 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. The two teams will continue their series on Saturday with a double header starting at 12:00 noon.
