BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team totaled 25 hits in 12-0 and 5-3 double header victories over the University of the Southwest Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.
In game one, the Howard Payne trio of
Michael Cannon,
Nathan Weyrauch and
Wesley Smith held the University of the Southwest to just two hits on the way to the Jackets 12-0 victory.
Michael Cannon recorded the victory in the start striking out three in five innings, It was his first victory of the season and as a Yellow Jacket.
Nathan Weyrauch threw one hitless frame and
Wesley Smith threw a hitless seventh to finish the game.
Five different Jackets recorded multiple hits in the game lead by
Noah Payne with a 4-for-4 outing with three RBIs.
Cody Cain finished 3-for-3 from the plate and
Cliff Lunceford was 3-for-4.
Cody Brown and
Walker Dailey each had two hits. Dailey also drove in three runs.
Game two was much closer with the Jackets using a two-run sixth to secure the game 5-3. After recording 17 hits as a team in game one, HPU would score five runs on eight hits.
With the game tied at 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth, David Groves singled up the middle to plate
Cliff Lunceford giving the Jackets the lead 4-3. Walker Dailey then added an insurance run on a bunt single to the pitcher scoring
Cody Cain. 5-3 Jackets.
Cody Cain and
Walker Dailey each finished the game 2-for-2 from the plate.
Walker Dailey and
Will Roberts each also had two RBIs.
Jonathan George when three innings in the start allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two.
Boardman Adams threw one scoreless inning, Joshua O'Connor recorded the win in relief allowing just one run on two hits in two innings of action.
Zach Moseley recorded his third save of the year striking out two in the final frame.
Howard Payne is now 17-10 overall and University of the Southwest stands at 13-30 after the loss. The Jackets will travel next to LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas for a weekend conference series.
