BROWNWOOD, Texas - Howard Payne University's Haley Slater drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Concordia University Texas 2-1 Thursday afternoon in conference action.

Howard Payne recorded 11 hits in the game but stranded seven runners. Celese Tirres was solid in the circle for the Lady Jackets limiting Concordia to just three hits in the victory.

With Concordia leading 1-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, Brittany Ponder would tie the game by reaching on a fielding error by second baseman allowing Celina Ortiz to score.

In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, a Haley Slater RBI single to left center drove in Adrienne Sanchez for the 2-1 conference victory.

Celese Tirres got the complete game victory allowing just three hits and one run to improve to 12-15 on the year. Celina Ortiz lead the Lady Jackets with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Rachel Hitt, Sabrina Ochoa and Haley Slater each finished with two hits each.

Howard Payne is now 14-19 overall and 10-15 in American Southwest Conference action. Concordia stands at 8-27 overall and 5-20 in league play.The two teams will finish out the series on Friday with a double header starting at 12:00 noon.
