LONGVIEW, Texas - The Howard Payne University baseball team fell 3-2 and 12-6 in a conference double header at LeTourneau University Saturday afternoon.
With the double header losses, Howard Payne is now 17-13 overall and 7-8 in American Southwest Conference action. LeTourneau stands at 11-16 overall and 8-10 in league play.
Howard Payne held a 2-0 lead going into the seventh of game one, but the Yellow Jackets would give up three runs in the seventh to fall 3-2. A costly fielding error with the bases loaded proved to be the difference in the inning.
The Jackets got a run in the first on a Matthew Daniel single to right field to score
Noah Payne. Then in the fourth, a
Cody Cain single to left field brought home
Seth Dohrman.
Adrian Acosta (3-1) got the loss in the start going 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out five. Six different Jackets recorded hits in the game.
A
Cliff Lunceford RBI single in the Jackets first at bat of game two seemed to get HPU off to the right start. But LeTourneau responded big in the bottom of the inning scoring five and then again in the third scoring six.Â
In the fourth,
Cliff Lunceford sac fly to center field plating
Cody Cain. Later, the Jackets added four runs in the sixth on a
Brandon Garrett RBI single, a
Will Roberts RBI walk with the bases loaded and fielding error by the right fielder allowing
Brandon Garrett and
Cody Brown to score.Â
Tyler Colburn (3-4) got the loss in the start giving up 10 runs on seven hits.
Jonathan George threw 4.0 innings in relief allowing two runs on six hits.
Chad Anders threw two hitless innings to close out the game.
