MARSHALL, Texas – The Howard Payne University baseball team lost a heart breaker 9-8 in the 10th inning Saturday on day two of the American Southwest Conference tournament.
Down 6-2 after eight, the Yellow Jackets make an amazing comeback scoring six runs in the top of the ninth to gain an 8-6 headed. After Sul Ross State tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the inning, Howard Payne was unable to take back the lead stranding a runner in the tenth.
In the bottom of the tenth, it was a wild pitch by HPU's
Jonathan George that allowed Sul Ross State's Wesley Moss to score from third for the game winner.
Senior
Joshua Martinez led the Jackets going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior
Walker Dailey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs on his second homerun of the season.
Benjamin Lewis was 2-for-5 with an RBI. The Jackets had 14 total hits as a team.
Jonathan George (0-2) recorded the loss in relief going 1.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits. Senior
Tyler Colburn went 3.2 innings in the start allowing five runs on seven hits.
Joshua O'Conner threw a solid 4.1 innings of relief allowing one run on two hits.
Howard Payne finishes the season at 19-21 overall and Sul Ross State stands at 19-23 overall.
