SEGUIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University volleyball team lost their first match and won their second match to finish 1-1 during the second day of the Texas Lutheran University Bulldog Classic.
In their first match of the day, the Lady Jackets took on Lewis and Clark College falling 1-3 (20-25, 25-18, 17-25, 16-25.)
After a 25-20 first set, Howard Payne used a .476 attack percentage to take the second set 25-18 evening the match at 1-1. The Lady Jackets struggled to match that performance during the third set though and the Pioneers used 25 total attacks to reclaim the lead, 2-1. Lewis and Clark then finished the fourth set with a .276 attack percentage, their best in the game to close out the fourth set, 25-16 and take the match.
HPU was led by Shelbie Harry with 16 kills and Kailey Doering added 10 kills. Cheyanne Lovelady finished with a match high 27 assists and Analisa Anzaldua finished with 17 digs, tied for a game high.
In the second match of the day, the Lady Jackets won in three sets vs. Schreiner University to collect their first win on the season (25-20, 28-26, 26-24.) Shelbie Harry was tied for the game lead with 11 kills and Cheyanne Lovelady added to a fine overall performance on the day by collecting 27 assists. Taliyah Wade led HPU with 11 digs and Kailey Cargill had five service aces during the victory.
Howard Payne is now 1-4 overall and will return home to host St. Mary's University in their final non-conference match before ASC play begins. You can find live links on the HPU volleyball schedule.
