Jackets win in four sets versus Arlington Baptist

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Having just recently completed a thrilling come from behind victory at Concordia University on Saturday, the Lady Jackets returned home to host Arlington Baptist College.

Looking to build on that momentum and capture their third win of the season, Howard Payne came into the match fired up. However, Arlington Baptist was coming of a victory of their own and looked impressive to start the game.

Howard Payne would eventually win the game in four sets (18-25, 25-16, 25-8, 28-26) but only after dropping the first set, 25-18. The Patriots took advantage of 12 attack errors and used a .122 attack percentage to pull ahead and get things started on Tuesday night.

The Lady Jackets rebounded with a 25-16 victory in the second set, holding Arlington Baptist to just five kills while forcing six errors (-0.32 attack percentage.) They would cruise to victory in the next three sets moving their record to 3-6 on the season.

Howard Payne dominated the third set, winning 25-8 while putting up an impressive .586 attack percentage. The Patriots did attempt to force the game into a fifth set by pushing the Lady Jackets to a 28-26 result. But a service ace from Shelbie Harry ended their hopes and gave HPU the win.

Cheyanne Lovelady continued her stellar play by gathering 52 assists and 10 digs on the evening while Shelbie Harry led all players with a total of 16 kills (.308 attack percentage.) Kailey Doering chipped in 12 kills of her own (.333 %) and Callie Molloy had 18 digs on the night.

Howard Payne was able to hold the Patriots to a .067 attack percentage and just 46 points while collecting 57 kills and eight service aces. Briana Williams had 18 digs while Analisa Anzaldua and Taliyah Wade each had 17 digs.

The Lady Jackets will now head back on the road to compete in the ASC Crossover on the campus of Concordia University in Austin, Texas. They are set to play University of Texas-Dallas on Friday at 5:00 pm in the first of two matches slated to take place over the weekend. Fans can follow along on Twitter @HPUVBall.
