GEORGETOWN, Texas - Poor second half shooting leads to a 57-49 loss for the Howard Payne University women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Southwestern University.
Giving up a 30-28 halftime lead, the Lady Jackets shot just 17% in the third quarter and 25% for the game from the field.
Howard Payne would lead by as much as nine midway through the second quarter on
Valarie Matlock three-point bucket.
Down by 11 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Jackets made a late push and cut the difference to five, 53-48 with 2:05 left to play. HPU could not get any shots to fall closing out the game 57-49.
Valarie Matlock led HPU with 14 points and
Dominique Featherstone finished with a game high 12 rebounds.
Anastasia Willis added nine boards.
Southwestern was led by Tori Caraway with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Howard Payne is now 2-3 overall and Southwestern stands at 2-3 on the year. The Lady Jackets will play at the University of Texas at Dallas on Thursday at 5:30 pm in the conference opener for both teams.
