Jackets Lose To Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team fell 70-6 to Southwestern University Saturday afternoon at Birkelbach Field.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since Oct. 25th of 1950. Southwestern won that game 19-13. 67 years later it would be another win for Southwestern.

Howard Payne struggled offensively totally only 114 yards of offense. Southwestern ended with 701 total yards, 483 rushing and 218 passing.

The Jackets gained their only score after a Caisson Montieth 50 yard punt was muffed by Southwestern and the Jackets recovered the ball at the Southwestern 3-yard line.

Quarterback Jaxson Durham rushed in off right side for a 5-yard touchdown to put HPU on the scoreboard for the first time in the game with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter. The Gustavo Mendez extra point failed to make the score 63-6 Southwestern.

Tevin Dawson, Lucas Steinkamp, Austin Killgore and Elijah Washington each finished with five tackles for the Jackets. Dawson had two for loss and a pass breakup.

Justin Barrera had two punt returns for 34 yards with a long of 27 yards along with six kickoff returns for 118 yards and a long of 25 yards.

Montieth had 13 punts for 499 yards (38.4) and a long of 52 yards.

Howard Payne is now 1-8 overall and 1-7 in American Southwest Conference play. Southwestern stands at 5-4 overall and 5-3 in league action. The Yellow Jackets will close out the season next week at home versus Louisiana College at 1:00 pm. It will be senior day for Howard Payne with the senior players to be recognized before the kickoff.
