BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University women's basketball team improved to 1-1 in league play with a 60-45 victory over LeTourneau University Monday evening in the Brownwood Coliseum.
Howard Payne forced 17 turnovers and out rebounded LeTourneau 52-41 in the 60-45 conference win. The HPU bench outscored LeTourneau 26-0 in the game.
Though the game remained close early, the Lady Jackets slowly inched away never trailing their opponent and outscoring LeTourneau in every quarter.
Valarie Matlock led all scorers with 16 points along with two assists and three steals.
Djimonii Jackson followed with 10 points.
Dominique Featherstone pulled down a
game high 11 rebounds for the Lady Jackets. Chelsi Woodard added three block shots.
LeTourneau was led by Keauna Whitfield with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sha'donnaver Young and Ashley Reed added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Howard Payne is now 4-5 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference action. LeTourneau stands at 2-7 overall and 0-4 in league play. The Lady Jackets will have three consecutive road games next, Dec. 14th at Belhaven University in Jackson, Miss, Dec. 16th at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA and Dec. 18th versus Whitworth University played in Tyler, Texes.
