SEGUIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball fought back from a 12-point second half deficit to lead but fell in the end 67-66 to Texas Lutheran University Tuesday evening on the road.
Howard Payne won the rebounding on the night 45-34. The Jackets would have 21 offensive boards leading to a 21-4 advantage in second chance points for HPU. The difference in the game was the Jackets shooting 31% from the field while Texas Lutheran was able to connect on 50% of its shots in the game.
Howard Payne battled back from a 12-point Texas Lutheran advantage five minutes into the second half to take a one point lead, 62-61, on a three-pointer by Khyce Randall with 3:59 remaining in the game.
With the Jackets leading 66-65 with :55 seconds left to play, two free-throws put TLU up 67-66 with 19 second remaining. The Jackets would be unable to get the winning bucket in the closing seconds dropping the non-conference match-up 67-66.
HPU's Khyce Randall led all scorers with 20 points and a game high nine rebounds. Randall was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.
De'Marcus Hurd followed with 10 points and
Shadd Cole finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Javaris Jones was 3 of 3 from behind the arc for nine points.
Sebastian Andrade led TLU with 17 points followed by Nathan Josephs and Jackson Willoughby with 13 points each.
Howard Payne is now 4-6 overall and Texas Lutheran stands at 4-4 on the year. The Jackets will play Schreiner University at TLU on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
