SEGUIN, Texas - The Howard Payne University men's basketball team picked up a 75-67 non-conference victory over Schreiner University Wednesday afternoon at the Texas Lutheran University Bulldog Classic.
Howard Payne used 55% second half shooting while holding Schreiner to 33% after the break. The Yellow Jacket defense also held the Mountaineers to just 23% shooting from three-point range.
In a game of runs and of seven lead changes, the Yellow Jackets made their final push with five minutes remaining in the game that would them the win. Howard Payne outscored Schreiner 17-8 in the closing minutes to claim the 75-67.
Freshman standout Timothy Aguero led HPU with 21 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field while dishing out a game high six assists.
Khyce Randall followed with 20 points and seven rebounds.
De'Marcus Hurd added 14 points.
Schreiner was led by Keenum Gumbs with 22 points followed by Josh Bashford and Matthew Rindahl with 13 points each.
Howard Payne is now 5-6 overall and Schreiner stands at 3-6 on the season. The Jackets will have off till January 2nd when they play in Georgetown, Texas at Southwestern University at 3:00 pm.
