BROWNWOOD, Texas - Despite cloudy weather conditions and a 14-1 loss to LeTourneau University, the Howard Payne University softball team capped a successful Senior Day ceremony out at Lady Jacket Park on Saturday afternoon.
Kodi Glosson finished 2-3 from behind the plate with an RBI and two singles,
Tiffany Hinkleman fnished 2-2 and Rachel Hit was 1-3 with a double in the contest.
The LeTourneau opened the game with a five-run first inning and then leaned on the pitching services of Ashley Burdine to roll to the series-clinching victory. After a seven-run top of the fifth, LeTourneau had stymied any chance of a Howard Payne comeback and hung on to capture the 14-1 victory in five innings.
The Lady Jackets sole run came in the fifth inning while attempting to force the game into a full seven innings. After
Madison Sims singled up the middle with one out,
Tayler Rushing followed with a beautiful hit down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. Senior
Rachel Jackson would sub into the game as a pinch runner for Rushing.
Rachel Hitt's double to left center on the ensuing bat would put Jackson into scoring position. After
Kodi Glosson lined a single to left field, Jackson would end up coming around to score HPU's lone run on the day.
LeTourneau forced a pop out to end the game and would hold on for the 14-1 victory. It was the 2017 season finale for the Lady Jackets and we will now head into the off-season looking to build on the exceptional work of our 2017 seniors.
