MARYVILLE, TN - The Howard Payne University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in its 2017 season opener Friday evening at Maryville College.

After a scoreless first period, Howard Payne's Lesly Garcia scored on a pass from Rachel Crane in the 55th minute on a free kick outside box on the left side. 

With just under 20 minutes to play, Maryville answered with a goal in the 71st minute by Shannon Reagan. 

The Lady Jackets would continue to hold tough forcing overtime and the eventual 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.

Alexandra Thompson, who got the start in goal for HPU, recorded four saves and allowed the one goal before senior Nicole Goodwin entered to play the final 45:00 minutes recording three saves.

Kaitlyn Harrison had two shots on goal and Dayane Gutierrez, Lesly Garcia, Victoria Sanchez and Jada Austin each adding a shot on goal.

Howard Payne will take on Piedmont College on Saturday at 2:00 pm before returning to Brownwood.
