BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Howard Payne University football team could not get the offense going in a 63-3 loss to #5 Hardin-Simmons University in the Yellow Jackets home opener Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Howard Payne only managed 168 yards of total offense versus No. 5 ranked Hardin-Simmons. The Jackets only score came on a Jacob Walter 27 yard field goal with :20 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The score capped an 11 play 58 yard drive by the Jackets that took 3:34 off the clock.

The Jacket defense did record four sacks in the ball game. Tevin Dawson one, Jake Wright  1.5, Austin Killgore with .5 and Brady Wade and Eric Aguilar each adding a half sack.

HPU's Tariq Gray had three catches for 49 yards. Freshman QB Mitchell Jennings was 6 for 22 for 67 yards in his first start. Hunter Batten had 29 yards on 11 rushes.

Tevin Dawson and Austin Killgore led all tacklers with 11 tackles each, Dawson had 2.5 for loss and one sack. Killgore also had a tackle for loss and assisted on a sack.
