Lady Jacket Run Falls Short At UMHB

BELTON, Texas – A late run by the Howard Payne University women's basketball team came up short as the Lady Jackets fell 72-66 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Thursday evening.

Howard Payne was outrebounded 51-42 and shot only seven free-throws to UMHB's 32 in the game.

Down 56-43 to start the fourth quarter, the Lady Jackets started the period with a 9-0 run and would cut the Mary Hardin-Baylor lead to four midway through the quarter.

A Valarie Matlock jumper with 5:50 remaining in the game made the score 60-56 UMHB. Matlock finished the game with 16 points and four assists.

Foul trouble played a factor for the Lady Jackets down the stretch and UMHB would hold on for the 72-66 final.

Leading the Lady Jackets in scoring was Jada Evans with 17 points along with three assists. Dominique Featherstone had five points, seven rebounds and five steals off the bench for HPU.

UMHB was led by Hannah Holt and Alicia Blackwell with 17 points each. Kendall Rollins added 12 points.

Howard Payne is now 12-7 overall and 8-3 in American Southwest Conference action. UMHB stands at 16-3 overall and 9-2 in league play. The Lady Jackets will play next at Concordia University Texas in Austin, Texas on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
