BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne University Women's Soccer team endured a loss of 1-4 in today's American Southwest Conference match up against Hardin-Simmons University, played at the HSU Soccer Complex.
Senior Lady Jacket, Brittany Cortez, scored the only goal of the game in the last minute of the second half, with teammate Kate Van Wyk giving the assist. This was the first time in five years HPU was able to score against the Cowgirls.
Hardin-Simmons attacked the goal early, shooting three shots in the first seven minutes, eventually they found the back of the net a minute later. The Cowgirls were able to get one more goal in over the keeper's head to end the first half 0-2.
HPU dropped in stats to HSU in both halves in both shots and corner kicks at 9-13 in shots (3-13 shots on goal) and 2-9 in corner kicks.
The Cowgirls scored two more times in the second half, the first being dribbled to the goal after a free kick that resulted from a yellow card. Cowgirl, Kenne Kessler, earning a hat trick scoring 3-4 of HSU's goals.
Howard Payne is now 2-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play, while Hardin-Simmons is now 10-1-0 overall. The Lady Jackets will head back to Abilene this Saturday, October 13th, to play McMurry University at 5:30 P.M. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
