ALPINE, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team falls to Sul Ross State University 28-27 after missing an extra point attempt with 1:08 remaining in the game.
HPU's
Jordan Bryant stiff armed his defender and scored on a 26 yard pass from
Gage McClanahan to bring the Jackets to within one, 28-27 with 1:08 remaining in the game. Howard Payne was penalized after the touchdown 15 yards on the extra point for unsportsman like conduct for excessive celebration.
The extra point went wide left and after the onside kick by HPU failed, the Jackets dropped the conference matchup with the Lobos 28-27.
It was an intense second half with four total unsportsman like calls, leading to two Sul Ross players ejected from the game.
After neither team scored in the opening quarter, HPU's Bret Martinez found the endzone on a 5 yard run with 13:20 left in the second quarter.
SRSU tied the game a 7-7 with 8:57 left in the half but the Jackets answered with a
Kaidrion Latson 7 yard rushing touchdown with 6:32 left in the second.
SRSU took the kickoff back 89 yards for a TD making it 14-14. Then scored with 2:45 remaining to lead 21-14 at the break.
Receiving the second half kickoff, the Jackets scored on an
Eric Haverstock 15 yard catch with 11:24 in the third capping seven play, 72 yard drive. Game tied 21-21
After a rushing TD by SRSU with 9:20 left in the third, neither team would score till HPU's
Jordan Bryant TD catch with 1:08 remaining in the game.
HPU's
Gage McClanahan 22 of 34 passing for 251 yards, two TDs and three interception. Starting the game 8 for 8 passing, McClanahan surpassed 1,000 passing yards on the year.
Kaidrion Latson had 13 carries for 43 yards and one TD,
Brett Martinez had 6 carries for 23 yards and one TD.
Eric Haverstock had seven receptions for 127 yards and one TD.
DunTayviun Gross had nine catches for 67 yards.
Brit Boler led all tacklers with 11, two for loss and one sack.
Tevin Dawson finished with nine tackles and
Brady Wade had eight, with one for loss and a fumble recovery.
Kyle King had four punts for 175 yards (43.8) with a long of 57 yards.
Howard Payne is now 1-6 overall and 1-5 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross stands at 1-6 overall and 1-5 in league action. The Jackets will play at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
