LONGVIEW, Texas- Howard Payne University men's soccer team posted 2-1 thrilling double overtime victory over conference opponent LeTourneau University late Thursday evening.
After both teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation, HPU goal keeper
Andrew Hackney came up huge in the first overtime stopping the potential game-winning LeTourneau penalty kick just 1:38 into the first overtime.
It would be HPU's
Michael Westerman for the fourth time this season to net a penalty kick for the Jackets this time giving HPU the golden goal victory 2-1 three minutes and fifteen seconds into the second overtime period.
The Yellow Jackets come out fired up scoring their first goal at the 13-minute mark of the first half, an own goal by LeTourneau.
LeTourneau was able to score in the 36th minute off a penalty kick, ending the half 1-1.
Michael Westerman has five goals this season, four being off penalty kicks. Hackney recorded the win in goal for HPU gaining three saves and allowing the one goal.
The Yellow Jackets outshot LeTourneau 17-14 total shots (8-4 shots on goals) and 8-2 corner kicks.
Howard Payne is now 5-8-0 overall and 4-6-0 in American Southwest Conference play, while LeTourneau is 6-7-2 overall. The Yellow Jackets will head to Marshal Saturday, October 26th, to take on East Texas Baptist University at 7:30 P.M.
